Tom Myers, MD
Orthopedic Surgeon -
American Sports Medicine Institute
Dr. Myers grew up in Belle Fourche, South Dakota. After a
short and unimpressive basketball career at the University of South
Dakota he graduated with a double major in Biology and
Chemistry. His medical career began at The Johns Hopkins
University School of Medicine where he received his MD in
1996. He subsequently spent the next 5 and a half years
training in orthopedic surgery at Harvard University. At both
Johns Hopkins and Harvard, Dr. Myers conducted research on total
knee replacement which led to publications in respected orthopedic
journals. He remained at Harvard for further fellowship
training in orthopedic trauma at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical
Center, a busy level I trauma center in Boston.
Currently, he is pursuing yet another fellowship, this time in
sports medicine at the American Sports Medicine Institute in
Birmingham, Alabama. There he works with noted orthopedic
surgeons and assists in coverage of professional and major college
teams such as the Washington Redskins and Tampa Bay Devil
Rays. His current research interests include mechanisms of
injury in the throwing shoulder, autologous chondrocyte
implantation, and biomechanics of the reconstructed ACL. In
fact, he has recently developed the "Myers test for SLAP lesions"
which is a sensitive physical exam technique to detect labral
pathology in overhead throwing athletes. In his spare time,
he is involved in the development of 4 different concepts for
medical devices to be utilized as orthopedic surgical instruments
or implants and is currently pursuing these patents.
